Steve has taken lessons with many different teachers in Rochester since relocating here in 1977, and he has learned something from each of them that he incorporates into his own unique style and teaching philosophy. Steve has been studying with Maureen Hickey in earnest for 8 years. When he started private lessons with Maureen, she asked him to do a swing demo with her, his first, and he was hooked, not just as a social dancer, but performer. Always being one to help others by sharing his knowledge and experience, Steve became keenly aware that he loves to teach dance as much as he loves dancing itself. Steve also attends Ballroom Vermont Dance Camp for adults every summer where he studies in the gold level group with teacher Amanda Ball from Orlando, FL. So he strives for continuous improvement for himself even while helping others learn the joy of dancing.
Now retired from Eastman Kodak, Steve teaches ballroom classes and private lessons at DancEncounters. He teaches all the common American style ballroom and club dances: fox trot, waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, quickstep, rumba, samba, cha cha, salsa/mambo, bolero, East Coast swing/jive, West Coast swing, nightclub 2 step, and hustle. The first rule in his classes is "Have fun!" His philosophy is to make his classes interactive and give the students a say in the pace and direction of the class. He always spends time with review and technique so the student can learn to do it right and not just remember step sequences. The emphasis is on social dancing, not competition. The goal is to feel comfortable and look good on the dance floor with other dancers.
Steve also loves to perform, and dances many showcases around Rochester, especially for studio events and National Ballroom Dance Week. Many of these showcases he dances with Maureen, but also with his student, Colleen Cummiskey. He is a talented choreographer and choreographs most of his showcases himself. A highlight of Steve's performance history came in February 2011 when he choreographed and performed a rendition of John Travolta's More Than a Woman dance scene from Saturday Night Fever with partner Nancy Harrington in front of 3000 people at the annual Ugly Disco fundraiser at Riverside Convention Center.
